Sauti said: When the powerful Śṛṅgi, who was easily prone to anger, heard the news that his father was carrying a corpse, he was extremely angry.
सौति ने कहा: जब शक्तिशाली श्रृंगी, जो आसानी से क्रोधित हो जाते थे, ने यह खबर सुनी कि उनके पिता एक शव ले जा रहे थे, तो उन्हें बहुत गुस्सा आया।

स तं कृशमभिप्रेष्क्य सूनृतां वाचमुत्सृजन् अपृच्छत कथं तातः स मेऽद्य मृतधारकः
He looked at Kṛśa and, abandoning all pleasantness of speech, asked, " Why should my father carry a corpse?"
उन्होंने कृष्ण की ओर देखा और वाणी की सारी मधुरता त्यागकर पूछा, "मेरे पिता को शव क्यों ले जाना चाहिए?"
Kṛśa replied: "O friend! When King Pārīkṣit was roaming around on his hunt today, he placed a dead snake on your father's shoulders."
कृष्ण ने उत्तर दिया: "हे मित्र! जब राजा परीक्षित आज शिकार पर घूम रहे थे, तो उन्होंने तुम्हारे पिता के कंधे पर एक मरा हुआ साँप रख दिया।"

Śṛṅgi asked: "What harm had my father done to that evil-souled king? O Kṛśa! Tell me this and you will witness my ascetic powers."
श्रृंगी ने पूछा: "मेरे पिता ने उस दुष्ट राजा का क्या नुकसान किया था? हे कृष्ण! मुझे यह बताओ और तुम मेरी तपस्वी शक्तियों को देखोगे।"

Kṛśa said: "Abhimanyu's son, King Pārīkṣit, was out hunting and wounded a swift deer with a feathered arrow.
कृष्ण ने कहा: "अभिमन्यु के पुत्र, राजा परीक्षित, शिकार के लिए निकले थे और उन्होंने पंख वाले तीर से एक तेज़ हिरण को घायल कर दिया।

न चापश्यन्मृगं राजा चरंस्तस्मिन्महावने पितरं ते स दृष्ट्वैव पप्रच्छानभिभाषिणम्
He chased it alone and the king could not see the deer when he roamed in the wilderness of the great forest. He saw your father and asked him about it.
उसने अकेले ही उसका पीछा किया और जब वह विशाल जंगल के जंगल में घूमता रहा तो राजा हिरण को नहीं देख सका। उन्होंने आपके पिता को देखा और उनसे इसके बारे में पूछा।
The king was suffering from hunger, thirst and fatigue and repeatedly asked your father about the missing deer.
राजा भूख, प्यास और थकान से पीड़ित थे और बार-बार आपके पिता से लापता हिरण के बारे में पूछते थे।

स च मौनव्रतोपेतो नैव तं प्रत्यभाषत तस्य राजा धनुष्कोट्या सर्पं स्कन्धे समासृजत्
But your father was under a vow of silence. He was immobile and did not reply. Thereupon, the king picked up a dead snake with the end of his bow and placed it on his shoulders.
परन्तु आपके पिता ने मौन व्रत धारण कर रखा था। वह स्थिर था और उसने कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया। तब राजा ने अपने धनुष की नोक से एक मरे हुए सांप को उठाया और अपने कंधों पर रख लिया।
O Śṛṅgi! Rigid in his vows, your father is still seated there. However, the king has returned to his city, named after the elephant."
हे शृंगी! आपके पिता अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ हैं और अभी भी वहीं विराजमान हैं। हालाँकि, राजा अपने शहर में लौट आया है, जिसका नाम हाथी के नाम पर रखा गया है।"
Sauti said: Hearing this, the riṣi's son stiffened like a celestial pillar. His eyes reddened with anger and he looked like a blazing fire.
सौति ने कहा: यह सुनकर ऋषि का पुत्र एक दिव्य स्तंभ की तरह कठोर हो गया। उसकी आँखें क्रोध से लाल हो गयीं और वह धधकती हुई अग्नि के समान दिखाई देने लगा।
Afflicted with rage and powered by the strength of his anger, the powerful one touched the water and cursed the king,
क्रोध से पीड़ित और क्रोध की शक्ति से वश में होकर, शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति ने पानी को छुआ और राजा को श्राप दिया,

Śṛṅgi said: "The evil-hearted and vile king, the defiler of Brāhmana-s and disgrace of the Kuru lineage, who has placed a dead snake on my old and feeble father's shoulders,
शृंगी ने कहा: "दुष्ट हृदय वाला और नीच राजा, ब्राह्मणों का अपवित्र और कुरु वंश का कलंकी, जिसने मेरे बूढ़े और कमजोर पिता के कंधों पर मरा हुआ साँप रख दिया है,
will, triggered by my words, be taken to the abode of Yāma within seven nights from today,
मेरे शब्दों से प्रेरित होकर, आज से सात रातों के भीतर यम के निवास पर ले जाया जाएगा,

सप्तरात्रादितो नेता यमस्य सदनं प्रति द्विजानामवमन्तारं कुरूणामयशस्करम्
bitten by angry Takṣaka, the lord of the serpents, and smitten with the swift virulence of his poison."
साँपों के स्वामी, क्रोधित तक्षक ने डस लिया, और उसके जहर की तेज तीव्रता से घायल हो गया।"
Sauti said: Having thus angrily cursed the king, Śṛṅgi went to his father and found him seated in the cowshed, the dead snake on his shoulders.
सौति ने कहा: राजा को इस प्रकार क्रोधपूर्वक शाप देकर श्रृंगी अपने पिता के पास गए और उन्हें गौशाला में बैठे हुए पाया, उनके कंधे पर मरा हुआ साँप था।
On seeing the dead snake on his father's shoulders, Śṛṅgi was again possessed by anger.
अपने पिता के कंधे पर मरे हुए साँप को देखकर श्रृंगी फिर से क्रोध से वशीभूत हो गये।
Shedding tears of grief, he told his father, "O father! When I heard how the evil-hearted King Pārīkṣit insulted you, I cursed him in anger.
दुःख के आँसू बहाते हुए उसने अपने पिता से कहा, "हे पिता! जब मैंने सुना कि दुष्ट हृदय वाले राजा परीक्षित ने आपका अपमान कैसे किया, तो मैंने क्रोध में आकर उसे शाप दे दिया।
Within seven days from today, Takṣaka, the king of the snakes, will send the evil one to Vaivasvata's abode."
आज से सात दिनों के भीतर, साँपों का राजा तक्षक, दुष्ट को वैवस्वत के निवास पर भेज देगा।"

तमब्रवीत्पिता ब्रह्मंस्तथा कोपसमन्वितम् न मे प्रियं कृतं तात नैष धर्मस्तपस्विनाम्
At that, the father Śamīka told his enraged son, "O son! Your act does not bring me pleasure. This is not the dharma for ascetics.
इस पर पिता शमीक ने क्रोधित पुत्र से कहा, "हे पुत्र! तुम्हारे कृत्य से मुझे प्रसन्नता नहीं होती। यह तपस्वियों का धर्म नहीं है।"
We live in the domain of that king and we are righteously protected by him. We should not take note of his evil acts.
हम उस राजा के अधिकार क्षेत्र में रहते हैं और हम उसके द्वारा उचित रूप से संरक्षित हैं। हमें उसके बुरे कृत्यों पर ध्यान नहीं देना चाहिए।

सर्वथा वर्तमानस्य राज्ञो ह्यस्मद्विधैः सदा क्षन्तव्यं पुत्र धर्मो हि हतो हन्ति न संशयः
Ruling kings must always be pardoned by men like us. O son! There is no doubt that if you destroy dharma, it will destroy you.
सत्तारूढ़ राजाओं को हम जैसे लोगों द्वारा सदैव क्षमा किया जाना चाहिए। हे वत्स इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि यदि आप धर्म को नष्ट करते हैं, तो यह आपको भी नष्ट कर देगा।

यदि राजा न रक्षेत पीडा वै नः परा भवेत् न शक्नुयाम चरितुं धर्मं पुत्र यथासुखम्
If the king does not protect us, we will suffer from many afflictions. O son! We will then not be able to pursue dharma according to our desires.
यदि राजा हमारी रक्षा नहीं करेगा तो हमें अनेक कष्ट सहने पड़ेंगे। हे वत्स तब हम अपनी इच्छाओं के अनुसार धर्म का अनुसरण नहीं कर पाएंगे।
O son! It is because we are protected by kings, who too know dharma, that we are able to pursue dharma and obtain great merits to which such kings also have a share.
हे वत्स ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि हम उन राजाओं द्वारा संरक्षित हैं, जो धर्म को भी जानते हैं, इसलिए हम धर्म का पालन करने और महान गुण प्राप्त करने में सक्षम हैं, जिसमें ऐसे राजाओं का भी हिस्सा है।
Like his great-grandfather, Pārīkṣit protects us, the way a king should protect his subjects.
परीक्षित अपने परदादा की तरह हमारी रक्षा करते हैं, जिस तरह एक राजा को अपनी प्रजा की रक्षा करनी चाहिए।
Today, he came here tired, hungry and thirsty and he did not know that I was under a vow of silence and he himself practices austerities.
आज वह थका-माँदा, भूखा-प्यासा आया था और उसे मालूम नहीं था कि मैंने मौन व्रत धारण कर रखा है और वह स्वयं तपस्या करता है।

तस्मादिदं त्वया बाल्यात्सहसा दुष्कृतं कृतम् न ह्यर्हति नृपः शापमस्मत्तः पुत्र सर्वथा
Therefore, you have committed an evil act through childishness. O son! In no way does that king deserve a curse from us."
अत: तूने बचपनावश बुरा कार्य किया है। हे वत्स वह राजा किसी भी प्रकार से हमारे शाप का पात्र नहीं है।”
